in (between) movement
for dance, 2 projected videos and electronics
Duration: 22 minutes / 40 minutes (extended)
in (between) movement is a multimedia performance combining dance, two projected videos, and electronics (tape). The work investigates the shifting notion of belonging as both a physical and a metaphysical space. The choice of format reflects the layered nature of this theme. Dance situates the body at the center of the work: the dancer reacts to the sonic and visual environment in an improvisatory manner, allowing the performance to remain fluid and responsive. This openness mirrors the instability and transformation inherent in the concept of belonging and migration.
The two video projections construct a shifting environment that surrounds the performer. One projection is placed conventionally on the wall, while the second is projected onto the floor. This dual setup creates two intersecting visuals where the wall projection frames the dancer in relation to the larger external environment, while the floor projection creates a surface the body must physically move across. This setup intensifies the sense of dislocation and forces the performer into a constant reorientation and exploration of the given space reflecting the environment they’re in. The fixed media provides the sonic framework where it focuses on the deconstruction of familiar sounds, expanding and abstracting them into new textures. This creates a sonic world that is almost unrecognizable yet familiar but estranged, expressing an undercurrent of inner turmoil.
By bringing body, sound, and image into dialogue, in (between) movement highlights the tension between inner states and external conditions. It reflects the layered, unstable experience of belonging and estrangement, leaving space for constant negotiation and transformation.
